Bringing out the Amnesty in me

It takes certain special items to bring out certain passions in you -- passions you had forgotten were there; passions that you once held very dearly to your heart; passions that at one time were your life.

So as my previous post stated, I watched "The Constant Gardener" on Sunday. GREAT movie. One of the best I've seen in a long time (which may not be saying much, since I really haven't watched movies in a long time, but still ...). It's a "compelling love story that's also an international thriller." But it is also a story that evokes the humanitarian in us. The plot may not be far off from reality, which is why it hits so hard. Long story short: The movie really brought out the Amnesty International in me ...

I did quite a bit for Amnesty while in college. We'd like to think our efforts made a difference. There are just so many causes to fight for ... and so little people to fight with. But watching a movie like "The Constant Gardener" made me remember why I was so involved with Amnesty, why I wanted to join the Peace Corps or go on missionary trips after college (I got married instead), why I was going to die with a clear conscience knowing I tried to help the struggling people in this world ...

Well, we all know none of those plans came to light. Instead I'm a mom of two beautiful girls with a great job in a new house and a world full of dreams for them. I'm certainly not one of those parents who will try to live out my dreams through my kids, but I do certainly hope that I can teach them great values -- like selflessness, compassion -- that separate the walkers from the talkers: how we, who are so much more fortunate than like 90% of the people in this world, can give back with our time, wisdom, money, resources and, most important, our hearts.

You know, to do as Christ told us to do.

Oh Cathy, you're too kind with your words. Only a true friend could be so encouraging! :) ... Yes, show us lots of UE pictures! You've gotta take one of you standing on the UE stone sign at the very front of the oval with Olmsted in the back. Also, MOORE HALL! And of course the plaza and the memorial fountain there. Where are you staying in Evansville?

Been a long time since I have been on here. I loved the Constant Gardener and thought of you when I saw it. I do still join some groups and write letters/emails, but I am not as active as I once was. I was thinking the other day how I need to set up making birthday cakes for homeless kids at shelters. We all had to grow up and spend our times being adults, but that doesn't mean that we don't contribute still. We do, and those of us who are compassionate souls always will contribute and care. Things change slowly, but they change.
